The most common failure types, sorted by when they typically appear.
The QC Ultra uses multiple MEMS microphones for its CustomTune ANC and Immersive Audio features. Moisture from sweat or rain can penetrate the microphone ports and corrode the MEMS element. When a microphone fails, ANC becomes unbalanced — users describe it as a "whooshing" or "underwater" sensation in one ear.
Bose uses protein leather (synthetic polyurethane leather) for ear cushions across their QC line. This material is known to flake, peel, and crack within 1-3 years, especially in humid climates or with frequent skin contact. Once the surface layer breaks down, the foam underneath is exposed and crumbles. Bose sells replacement cushions (~$40) that use the same material.
The headband foam padding compresses permanently over time, reducing cushioning on the crown of the head. This leads to hot spots and discomfort during extended listening sessions. Unlike the ear cushions, the headband padding is not user-replaceable without disassembly.
