How Sundr Makes Money
You deserve to know how we keep the lights on, and how that does (and doesn't) affect the advice we give you.
The Short Version
Sundr earns revenue through affiliate commissions when you buy a replacement product through one of our links. That's it. We do not charge users or run ads.
“Affiliate links do not influence Sundr's repair-vs-replace recommendations. Decisions are computed by the scoring engine before any monetization logic is applied.”
How It Works, Step by Step
- You describe your problem. Device type, age, issue, warranty status.
- Sundr scores five factors. Cost, lifespan, environmental impact, parts availability, and repair success rate are weighted and combined into a recommendation. See our full methodology.
- You get a recommendation. Repair, replace, or “don't bother”, with a confidence score and full breakdown.
- If the recommendation is “replace,” we suggest durable alternatives. Product links on this page may be affiliate links. If you click through and buy, the retailer pays us a small commission at no extra cost to you.
The recommendation is locked in at step 3. Affiliate links only appear in step 4. The engine does not know or care which products pay commissions. It has already made its decision.
What We Earn From
- Affiliate commissions on replacement products. When Sundr recommends replacing a device and you purchase through our link, the retailer pays us a commission (typically 1-8% depending on the product category)
- DurableFinds product recommendations. Our curated lists of long-lasting products include affiliate links to retailers
What We Do Not Earn From
- Repair shop listings. Repair shops cannot pay to appear in Sundr results or to rank higher. All shop listings come from Google Places.
- Sponsored recommendations. No brand or manufacturer can pay to influence a repair-vs-replace recommendation. The scoring model is not aware of affiliate relationships.
- Display advertising. Sundr does not run banner ads, pop-ups, or any form of display advertising.
Our Data
Sundr collects repair cost data, decision outcomes, and device longevity information from the people who use our tools. We share this data freely with policy makers and non-profit organizations working on right-to-repair legislation and consumer protection.
If you work in government or at a non-profit and would like access to our repair data, get in touch.
“Doesn't That Mean You Want Me to Replace Things?”
Fair question. Here's why the incentive is actually aligned:
- Trust is our product. If we push unnecessary replacements, you stop trusting us. An inaccurate recommendation costs us a user; an accurate one earns long-term loyalty.
- The engine decides before money enters the picture. The scoring model runs independently. It evaluates cost, lifespan, environmental impact, parts availability, and repair success rates, then produces a verdict. Affiliate links are applied after the fact, only to replacement recommendations.
- Our methodology is public. Every weight, threshold, and data source is documented on our How We Calculate page. You can verify the logic yourself.
- Most recommendations are “repair.” The majority of devices brought to Sundr are worth repairing. We're comfortable with that. We'd rather give the right answer and earn nothing on that visit than push a sale.
