Keurig machines puncture K-Cups with two needles — the top needle injects pressurized water and the bottom needle allows coffee to flow into the cup. Both needles clog with compacted coffee grounds, scale, and oils. A clogged top needle reduces water flow (weak, under-filled cups); a clogged bottom needle causes overflow and grounds in the cup. Keurig provides a needle cleaning tool, but many users do not use it regularly.
Machines with integrated milk frothing circuits develop blockages from dried milk protein and fat deposits inside the tubing, venturi valve, and frother nozzle. Dried milk is extremely difficult to remove once hardened. A blocked milk circuit produces thin, unfoamed milk or no milk flow at all.
