Why Irons Fail
An iron is one of the simplest appliances you own: a heating element, a thermostat, a water tank, and a cord. That simplicity is why repair data on irons is so clear. The same few things kill them, over and over.
Limescale is the root of most of it. Every time you fill the tank with tap water and boil it into steam, minerals stay behind. Scale clogs the steam vents, coats the heating chamber, and makes the element work harder until the thermostat or thermal fuse gives out. Heating failures are the top failure type for almost every iron brand in the repair data, and most of them start as scale.
The cord dies at the handle. An iron's cord flexes at the same spot thousands of times. The strain relief eventually cracks and the wires inside fatigue. This is one of the most common iron faults, and also one of the cheapest to fix.
Drops crack tanks and soleplates. Irons live on the edge of a board and fall. Physical damage is a top-three failure type for every brand we track.
The good news: thermal fuses, cords, and seals are cheap parts. That is why irons get fixed at community repair events more often than most electronics.
What We Looked At
We ranked iron brands on real outcomes, not spec sheets:
Repair community data. Fix rates and ages from the Open Repair Alliance: 3,591 iron repair records across 8 brands with meaningful sample sizes. Two numbers matter: how often a broken iron gets fixed, and how old irons are when they show up broken. An iron that reaches a repair bench at 10 years old outlived most of the market before anything went wrong.
Sample depth. Tefal (1,424 records, including irons sold under the Calor name in France) and Philips (1,379) dominate the data. Rowenta, Russell Hobbs, Bosch, Morphy Richards, Braun, and AEG all clear 50+ records.
Build fundamentals. Soleplate material, tank construction, and whether the controls are a mechanical dial or a circuit board.
Which Iron Brands Actually Last
Rowenta. Best track record
Rowenta has the best fix rate of any iron brand we track: 53.9% of 180 repairs succeed, and the average Rowenta iron is 10.2 years old when it comes in. Both numbers lead the category among brands with real sample sizes. German-engineered steam irons with stainless steel soleplates, widely available in North America and Europe.
Philips. Best of the big two
The largest maker in the data after Tefal: 1,379 records, 48.4% fix rate, 7.7 years average age at repair. Heating faults are its top failure at 11.2%, which mostly means scale. Keep it descaled and the numbers say it runs a long time.
Tefal. The volume leader
1,424 records including its French-market Calor twins, 46.7% fix rate, 7.7 years average age. Statistically close to Philips. Tefal invented the non-stick soleplate and its steam irons are the default in much of Europe for a reason.
Braun and AEG. The old-timers
Braun irons average 10.4 years old at repair and AEG irons 12.2, the oldest fleets in the data. Both are smaller samples (103 and 53 records), so treat the numbers as a signal, not a verdict. A lot of these are older, simpler models that just refuse to die.
Bosch. The surprise at the bottom
Bosch irons get fixed only 34.7% of the time, the lowest rate we track, and they average just 6.5 years old at repair. A premium badge does not buy longevity in this category.

What Actually Kills Irons
From 3,500+ repair records:
- Heating failures. The top failure type for nearly every brand: 20% of Russell Hobbs records, 17.3% of Bosch, 15.9% of Morphy Richards, 11.2% of Philips. Most trace back to limescale stressing the element until it, the thermostat, or the thermal fuse fails. A blown thermal fuse is a cheap part and a common repair-cafe fix.
- Electrical faults. Cords, switches, and wiring: 12.9% of Russell Hobbs and Morphy Richards records, 8.9% of Rowenta. The cord failing at the handle is the classic one. It is fixable for the price of a cable.
- Physical damage. Drops and cracked housings: 14.4% of Morphy Richards records, 13.6% of Braun. A cracked water tank usually ends an iron; a cracked shell usually does not.
- Leaks. Worn valve seals and cracked tanks let water drip onto clothes or into the electronics. Seals can be replaced; tanks usually cannot.
Three of those four are cheap, replaceable parts. If your iron dies, check whether fixing it beats replacing it before it goes in the bin.
What to Look For When Shopping
Stainless steel or ceramic soleplate. Stainless steel is the durability pick: it glides well, cleans easily, and does not chip. Ceramic coatings glide beautifully but can flake at the edges after years of use. Cheap aluminum plates scratch and drag.
Anti-calc you can actually service. The best designs use a removable scale collector or a self-clean flush function. An iron you can descale properly is an iron that keeps steaming. This single habit addresses the top failure type in the data.
A mechanical dial over a circuit board. Electronic temperature controls add failure points a dial does not have. The longest-lived irons in the data are overwhelmingly simple ones.
A decent cord with a pivoting strain relief. Cord failure is a top-three fault. A thick cord that pivots at the handle outlasts a stiff one.
Think twice about steam generator stations. Separate-boiler stations press faster and suit heavy ironing loads, but they add a pump, a hose, and a pressurized boiler: more parts that scale up and fail. If you iron a few shirts a week, a good conventional steam iron is the more durable choice.
Empty the tank after use. Water sitting in the tank keeps depositing minerals between sessions. Thirty seconds of habit, years of extra life.
