The Honest Take on Tablet Durability
Tablets are a harder category to recommend for longevity than phones or laptops, and it's worth being upfront about why.
According to repair data from the Open Repair Alliance, the overall repair success rate for tablets at community repair events is just 42%. notably below the ~54% average across all electronics categories. Screens and batteries account for roughly 34% of all tablet faults, and most manufacturers make both extremely difficult to replace affordably.
The other problem: software support for tablets has historically been shorter than for phones, and tablets are often the last device to get updates when manufacturers prioritize flagship phones. Apple has improved on this with M-series iPads, but it remains an issue for budget tablets.
None of this means tablets are a bad purchase. But going in with realistic expectations. and choosing carefully. matters more in this category than in almost any other.
What We Looked At
We evaluated current tablets on four factors:
Software support length. iPadOS updates follow Apple's chip support schedule; Android tablet updates vary widely by manufacturer. A tablet that stops getting security updates becomes a liability for banking and sensitive tasks.
Repairability. Can the screen and battery be replaced affordably? Are service manuals publicly available? We reference iFixit scores and Open Repair Alliance data where available. The ORA notes that manufacturers have lobbied to make only screens and batteries available to independent repairers. which addresses the top fault categories but leaves charging ports, buttons, and software issues without affordable repair paths.
Build quality. IP rating for water/dust resistance, glass durability, chassis material, and hinge quality on convertible models.
Practical longevity. What tasks will this tablet do well 4-5 years from now? A tablet purchased primarily for video streaming has a longer useful life than one purchased for productivity tasks where software requirements grow over time.
