Tablets are a harder category to recommend for longevity than phones or laptops, and it's worth being upfront about why.

Screens and batteries account for roughly 34% of all tablet faults, and most manufacturers make both extremely difficult to replace affordably.
The other problem: software support for tablets has historically been shorter than for phones, and tablets are often the last device to get updates when manufacturers prioritize flagship phones. Apple has improved on this with M-series iPads, but it remains an issue for budget tablets.
None of this means tablets are a bad purchase. But going in with realistic expectations. and choosing carefully. matters more in this category than in almost any other.

What Actually Kills Tablets

- Screen damage. The largest single fault category. Tablet screens are large and relatively fragile. Replacement costs vary widely: $206-$548 depending on the model and who does the repair. Budget tablets often cost nearly as much to repair as to replace.

What to Look For When Buying a Tablet
Prioritize software update commitments. This matters more for tablets than any other category because the software abandonment problem is acute here. Apple M-series iPads have the best track record. Samsung now commits to 7 years for Tab S10 series. Most other Android tablets offer 3-4 years at best. and often don't deliver on those.
Check what you actually need the tablet for. A tablet used primarily for reading, video streaming, and light browsing has different requirements than one used for creative work or productivity. For consumption tasks, a $684 iPad does everything a $2466 Pro does. For professional creative work with Apple Pencil or external keyboard, the Pro hardware may genuinely matter.
Budget tablets are often false economy. A $206-$274 Android tablet with 2-3 years of updates and a poor-quality display costs more per year than a base iPad. The exception: if you need a tablet for a very specific limited use (child's device, dedicated recipe display, kiosk) and expect to replace it anyway.
