Most Durable Printers in 2026

Printers are the hardest thing to fix of anything we track. Fewer than 4 in 10 walk out of a community repair event working. Brother does best at 48%, and Brother printers show up for repair at 8.3 years old, older than any other brand. Here's what separates a printer that lasts from one that quits in three years.

Why are printers so hard to fix?

Start with the uncomfortable part. Printers get fixed less often than almost anything else we track.

Across roughly 3,900 printer repair records from the Open Repair Alliance, fewer than half leave working. HP sits at 38%, Canon at 36%, Epson at 42%. Sewing machines, kettles, and most small appliances land in the 50 to 60% range or higher. Printers are the floor.

The reason isn't what most people expect. Printers don't usually wear out. They stop talking.

Look at what people actually bring in. Of HP printers logged at repair events, 5.2% arrived with a connectivity fault and 3.3% with a software fault, both ahead of mechanical problems at 2.5%. Canon is the same shape: software 4.6%, connectivity 4.1%. Epson too: software 4.3%, connectivity 3.4%. Across the category, the top failure modes are drivers, firmware, and wifi. Not gears, not motors, not rollers.

That matters when you're shopping. A volunteer with a screwdriver can replace a belt. They can't make a discontinued driver work on a new version of macOS, and they can't undo a firmware update that decided your ink isn't real ink. The mechanical part of a printer is usually fine. The software around it is what dies.

What we looked at

Four things, in this order:

Community repair data. Fix rates and average age at repair from the Open Repair Alliance, covering about 3,900 printer records. Fix rate tells you whether a broken one can be saved. Average age at repair tells you how long people keep trying. Brother wins both.

Ink system. Refillable tanks or cartridges. This is the single biggest running-cost difference, and cartridge systems are where the firmware fights happen.

Simplicity. Every "smart" feature is a thing a vendor has to keep supporting. Cloud printing, phone apps, and subscription ink all depend on servers that outlive nobody's product roadmap. Standard drivers and plain network printing age much better.

Print technology. Laser or inkjet. Lasers have no liquid ink to dry out, which removes the failure that kills idle inkjets.

Laser or inkjet?

If you print rarely, buy a laser. That's the short version, and the repair data backs it up.

Brother is best known for its laser printers, and Brother leads every printer brand we track: 48% fix rate across 403 records, with an average age at repair of 8.3 years. HP, which sells far more inkjets, sits at 38% and 7.9 years. Canon, heavily inkjet, is 36% and 6.6 years. Epson is 42% and 6.0 years.

Here's the mechanism behind those numbers. Inkjets spray liquid ink through microscopic nozzles. Leave one sitting for a month and the ink in those nozzles dries. Now you're running cleaning cycles that burn ink to unclog a head, and if the head is built into the printer rather than the cartridge, a bad clog is the end of it. Laser printers fuse dry toner powder. Nothing to dry, nothing to clog. A laser printer can sit unused for a year and print fine.

Inkjets still win on color photos and on upfront price. If you print family pictures, you want an inkjet. If you print a shipping label twice a month and a tax return in April, a laser will still be working when the inkjet has given up.

Printers worth buying in 2026

No durability scores here. We haven't scored these the way we score the products on DurableFinds, and we're not going to make numbers up. What follows is the repair data plus verifiable design facts.

Brother laser printers. Best repair track record

Brother has the best fix rate of any printer brand in the data, 48% across 403 records, and the oldest average age at repair, 8.3 years. Its laser design helps: toner and drum are separate replaceable parts, so a worn drum doesn't force you to throw out the printer, and you're not paying for a new imaging unit every time you run out of toner. No liquid ink means nothing clogs while the printer sits.

Trade-offs: Color laser costs more upfront than color inkjet, and photo output isn't close. Toner is a bigger single purchase than a cartridge even when it's cheaper per page.

Epson EcoTank ET-4850 and ET-2850. Best running cost

Both use Epson's refillable tank design. You pour ink from a bottle into a reservoir instead of buying cartridges, which removes the cartridge chip from the equation entirely. Both carry a 2-year warranty, which is double what most printers ship with and a reasonable signal of what Epson expects from them. The ET-4850 is the bigger all-in-one; the ET-2850 is the smaller, cheaper sibling.

Trade-offs: Epson's fix rate is 42% and its average age at repair is 6.0 years, the youngest of the major brands. Tanks solve the ink economics, not the printhead. These are still inkjets, so they need to run regularly or the head can clog.

Canon PIXMA G7020. Tank alternative

Canon's MegaTank version of the same idea: refillable reservoirs, bottles instead of cartridges. Warranty is 1 year. Canon's community repair numbers are the weakest of the big four, 36% fix rate across 1,282 records at 6.6 years average age, so buy this one for the ink economics rather than for repairability.

Trade-offs: Same idle-clog risk as any inkjet, and the shortest warranty of the tank printers here.

HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e and HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw. Widely stocked, watch the firmware

HP is the volume brand, and it shows in the data: 1,448 records, more than anyone, at a 38% fix rate and 7.9 years average age at repair. Both of these carry a 1-year warranty. If you buy HP, the LaserJet is the more durable bet for the same reason Brother's lasers are. No liquid ink.

Trade-offs: HP has shipped firmware updates that make its printers reject third-party cartridges. That's a documented, repeated pattern, and it's a real longevity risk: a printer that works fine can stop accepting the ink you already bought. If you go HP, be deliberate about firmware updates and about which ink you commit to.

What actually kills printers

In rough order of how often it shows up in the repair data:

  1. Connectivity failure. The top single failure type for HP printers in the data and near the top for Canon and Epson. The printer works, the computer can't find it. Wifi pairing breaks after a router change, the app stops seeing it, the network stack gives up. Nothing is physically wrong, and there's often nothing a repair volunteer can fix.
  2. Software and drivers. Right behind connectivity, and ahead of mechanical failure for every brand we track. A new OS version drops support, the vendor never ships an updated driver, and a perfectly good machine becomes a paperweight. This is why standards support matters more than features.
  3. Clogged printheads. The inkjet killer. Ink dries in the nozzles when the printer sits idle. Cleaning cycles waste ink trying to clear it, and a head that's built into the printer body turns a clog into a replacement.
  4. Firmware that rejects your ink. HP's cartridge-blocking updates are the well-known case. It's not wear, it's policy, and it can end a working printer's useful life.
  5. The vendor leaving. Samsung printers have a 50% fix rate at 8.2 years average age, the best numbers in our data. You can't buy one. Samsung sold its printer business to HP in 2017 and stopped making them. Good hardware plus no future firmware, no new drivers, and a shrinking parts pool is still a dead end eventually.

Notice how little of that list is mechanical. Printers rarely die of use. They die of neglect, abandonment, and vendor decisions.

What to look for when shopping

Match the technology to how often you print. Print a few pages a week or less? Laser. The ink can't dry because there isn't any. Print photos regularly? Inkjet, and use it often enough to keep the head wet.

Prefer refillable tanks if you go inkjet. EcoTank and MegaTank printers use ink bottles instead of chipped cartridges. Cheaper per page, and no cartridge authentication to fight with.

Check that it does plain network printing. A printer that works over standard protocols, without the vendor's app or cloud account, will keep working after the app is discontinued. Cloud-only features are borrowed time.

Fewer smart features is a feature. Every subscription service, companion app, and cloud shortcut is another thing that can be switched off from somewhere else.

Buy a printer that uses ink you can still buy in five years. Popular, long-running cartridge and toner lines stay stocked. Odd or short-lived model families don't.
